Big, Large & Huge Vintage Brooches

Costume Jewelry

On this page we will try to gather our biggest rhinestone brooches, those beauties from
the 1930s and '1940s. I like to call them my "big girls." These large brooches are almost always
unsigned, but are beloved by collectors because they call to mind in the golden age of glamour

Coro Order of the Royal Garter Star Brooch

Reverse

Coro Amazing Royal Garter Star Brooch with Black Cameo

This striking brooch offers a black vintage plastic cameo--the little German headband girl, in a striking mid-century sunburst setting. The large, heavy,  setting is done with individual "bursts"--beaded strips of raised polished goldtone knobs. The gilded and antiqued cast metalwork is stunning. Sun/starbursts were popular motifs during the atomic era, but this brooch doesn't seem to fit with those styles--it appears to be more a late 1930s-early 1940s creation. In fact, except for the cameo, it looks exactly like a symbol for the Order of the Royal Garter! Measuring 2 3/4" tall x 2 1/2" wide, this incredible jewel is also chunky, rising in a dome shape about 3/4" from the pinstem. This black beauty is bound to be noticed. Signed in back in script with no copyright mark, Coro. Very Good condition. Unusual and rare! $75

Large Vintage Brooch

Detail   Reverse

Glorious Vintage Big Brooch with Fuchsia Moonglow

This buxom beauty reminds me of early Coro, but it's an unsigned beauty. Made of silver plated pot metal and studded with clear round rhinestones set in highly beaded metal makes the brooch shimmer as if there were more rhinestones than there actually are. The brooch is heavy for it's size, and also has rhinestones at the bottoms of the flower stalks, which is also a clue to designer quality. The fuchsia moonglow cabs are smooth and mesmerizing. The brooch is 3 7/8" tall x 2 18" wide. Though the rhinestones are aging, there are still plenty of twinkle left in this piece of jewelry history! Just Very Good. $55

Tulip Trembler Vintage Brooch

Reverse

Vintage CORO Rhinestone Tulip Trembler Brooch, Enameled

Unsigned, attributed to Coro. This beautiful trembler is an obvious Coro design, which matches the 1940 Coro patent which can be seen here. Offered today is this lovely rhodium plated trembler pin from the late 1940s or early 1950s,well made and in unusually well-preserved condition Pave crystal rhinestones encrust the openwork tulip head. Rising from the center are three red baguette stamens, perched on wire so that as you move they shimmy and shake! He'll love this old fashioned look! The stem is enameled brown, the lowest part sparkling with more diamante. The leaves are deep green, each outlined in rhodium plating. and the leaves. Measures 3 1/4" tall. Very Good condition with minor age-related wear, but still sparkling.  $78

1930s Big Pot Metal Rhinestone Brooch

Reverse

Large 1930s Pave Crystal & Red Rhinestone Flower Brooch

Here's another lost beauty from the 1930s, a chromium plated pot metal brooch design that you can sometimes find with different colored navettes for petals. This one has ruby red navettes, along with the pave crystals. The flower head petals are concave to the domed pave center, allowing stones to spark off one another. This graceful jewel is 3 1/2" tall and in Very Good condition, with all rhinestones present and sparkling. $78

Beaded Cluster Crystals Rhinestones Haskell Style Brooch

Reverse

Bewitching Autumn Beaded Cluster Brooch   4"

The bewitching hour is near, and time to wear this mysteriously Haskell style beaded flower brooch, decorated with clusters of glass moonstones, faux pearls and rhinestones in undreamed of color combinations--teal, hyacinth, fruit & gold! Rose montees glisten from golden lacy filigree in a wealth of autumn crowded into one spectacular brooch. Warmth. The brooch is 4" tall, the base flower formed by a wondrously undulating filigree and twisted chain forming the stem along with golden beads as florets. This brooch is chunky, rising 3/4" above the pin stem. Very Good + condition. $38

Vintage Sterling Silver Lambs Brooch

Reverse

Sterling Silver Mother Sheep and Baby Lamb Brooch

The lush 3-D design is what makes this piece extra special, with plump fluffiness in the mama and the little baby lamb, both with bells around their necks. This great jewel is 2 1/2" tall and 2 3/4" wide; it is also thick and heavy. It has been well cared for and is in Excellent condition. This brooch weighs one ounce! Marked in back, partially rubbed away, "STERLING." $78

Art Deco Bird Brooch

Reverse

Art Deco Pave Rhinestone Soaring Bird Brooch

This is a dramatic find from the late 1930s or early 1940s, a glorious soaring bird! This sweetheart is somewhat 3-D with slightly tiered wigs and tail feathers. She is covered in crystal rhinestone in beaded settings. The finish is either very shiny chrome or rhodium, and she has a single black rhinestone eye. On her back is a design number, 20616. The brooch measures 2 7/8" from lower tail feather to tip of beak, and a 2 3/4" wingspan, which covers a lot of area. This bold & buxom beauty is in Very Good condition, with rhinestones that are aging but still brilliant. Make her yours! $58

Very Good condition. Enjoy for $58

Big & Wild Sterling Silver L.S. Co. Retro Brooch

These huge sterling pieces by Louis Stern Co are all wartime retro, but this one has more of a tropical deco design, back from the days when the art deco linear design lines were evolving into the spare nosegays of retro modern. In most of these old pins, like this one, the prong set stones are unfoiled and absolutely brilliant. In this one, the main prong set aqua stone is surrounded by little blue stones that are set by golden leaves overlays!. Not all the leaves and fronds have vermeil coating; this is deliberate to the design, since gold and silver together in one jewel was stylish during the 1940s. For instance, the dropped leaf to the right of the brooch is bare silver; not a trace of old vermeil can be found on it, indicating it ws designed that way, as well as the wires at the base of the bouquet.  The brooch is a big one at 4 1/2"  x 3 3/8" wide. Signed on the diamond-shaped plaque, L.S. Co. 1/20 12K GF Sterling Silver. Very Good condition, with tarnish, especially in back.  $75

Large Pave Iris Orchid Brooch

Reverse

Large 1930s Pave Rhinestone Iris Pot Metal Brooch

Made in the art deco era, this circa 1930 pot metal iris offers a tropical deco design--the wild undulations, while curvy, still have a linear Art Deco deco arrangement. My heart beats fast every time I see this Book Piece beauty. Featured on page 74 of the 2008 Edition of Warman's Vintage Jewelry, by Leigh Leshner, this incredible design features pave clear crystals set in textured and beaded metal. This one's a little different than the same style of brooches shown in the same book on page 122. For one thing, some of the rhinestones are prong set--on a row icing the top of the brooch and on the florets at 5 O'clock and 7 o'clock. Also, this brooch is taller at 3 3/4", and willowy at 2 1/8" at the widest point. This example is in especially nice Very Good+ condition, with rhinestones still sparkling and pot metal smooth, still shining and without corrosion. Only the prong-set stones are slightly dark around the edges, but still strike sparks in the centers. Enjoy this desirable, hard- to find, dazzling showgirl beauty! $85

Book Piece!

Antique Pot Metal Cockateil Brooch or Bird of Paradise Pave Rhinestone Brooch

Reverse

Antique Pot Metal Cockatiel or Bird of Paradise Rhinestone Brooch

This beautiful peacock, cockatiel, or bird of paradise was created and copied by several designers or manufactures during circa 1930s to mid-1940s. I've never seen one signed. This is the shorter version at only 3" tall. In Warman's Vintage Jewelry, 2008 edition, page 10, author Leigh Leshner shows this bird in several sizes and explains that differences in design sizes were common. Crystal rhinestones are pave along the body and tail feathers of bird, who also sports a twinkling blue rhinestone eye. The bright silvery finish does not show much wear, and the rhinestones flash like crazy. Very Good+ for this beloved antique. Fastens with early safety catch. $48
