On this page we will try to gather our biggest rhinestone brooches, those beauties from
the 1930s and '1940s. I like to call them my "big girls." These large brooches are almost always
unsigned, but are beloved by collectors because they call to mind in the golden age of glamour

Rare 1930s Era Pot Metal Turtle Brooch with Huge Stone

Who won't love this dear old cast pot metal turtle? His shell is a giant faceted unfoiled faceted sapphire glass navette jewel set with wide prongs. His hands and feet all have individual fingers and toes. He has a cute little tail and red rhinestone eyes. Measurements are 2 3/4" tall from tail to nose and 1 3/4" wide, a decent size compared to the tiny turtles from mid century design houses, but that was the old way in 1930s and '40s fashion jewels. Equipped with an early safety clasp, this one of a kind turtle jewel is in excellent condition. $78

Art Deco Bird Brooch

Reverse

Art Deco Pave Rhinestone Soaring Bird Brooch

This is a dramatic find from the late 1930s or early 1940s, a glorious soaring bird! This sweetheart is somewhat 3-D with slightly tiered wigs and tail feathers. She is covered in crystal rhinestone in beaded settings. The finish is either very shiny chrome or rhodium, and she has a single black rhinestone eye. On her back is a design number, 20616. The brooch measures 2 7/8" from lower tail feather to tip of beak, and a 2 3/4" wingspan, which covers a lot of area. This bold & buxom beauty is in Very Good condition, with rhinestones that are aging but still brilliant. Make her yours! $78

Vintage Pink Rhinestone Big Bouquet Brooch

We have for you a beautiful example of pre WWIII jewelry of the late 1930s and early 1940s in a style transitioning between Art Deco and Retro. This delicate looking spray has been strong enough to last for more than 60 years, and there's no reason it can't go another hundred. The spray is made of stiff wires hold prong set openback unfoiled pink oblong rhinestones to represent the flower heads; others end in beaded metal buds. The spray rises from an undulating ribbon and foliage. design of smooth goldtone. Notice the piercing work in the leaves. What an exquisite bouquet brooch, and big, too, at 4 1/4" tall x a spread of 3". This dear brooch is in Very Good condition. $95

Vintage Red Rhinestone Brooch

Big 5" Vintage Brooch with Huge Ruby Red Glass Rhinestones

These old Amazon sized bouquet brooches are like the ladies who wore them--stylish, sweet, maybe modest, maybe a femme fatale behind all that. This one lilts and curves. The stems and foliage of this splendid bouquet are thick heavy gold plated meal holding up three very large 40mmb x 30mm kite shaped ruby glass rhinestones, unfoiled and set in prongs. This is a heavy, high quality coat brooch; if you must wear it with a lighter material, reinforce by pinning into a bra strap or undershirt. At 5" tall x 2 1/2" wide, you will attract plenty of attention at that party. This incredible brooch is in Excellent condition, with very little finish wear in back. $85

B. Blumenthal 4" Rare Enamel Floral Brooch with Big Stone

Circa 1940. For you today is this B. Blumenthal floral brooch, both beautiful and rare. The brooch offers a sensuous floral setting of gilded pot metal, the petals enameled metallic red, enclosing a 25mm unfoiled prong set diamante jewel. Though rarely, fashion jewelry designers as far back as early century used metallic paints or enamels on their jewelry designs.

The design itself evokes a demure quality making the simple but shining overgrown flower just dear. There is no visible wear on the enamel, and the stone is brilliant. The brooch is 4" from top of petals to lowest part of stem. This irreplaceable jewel is signed on an oval plaque on the reverse, B. Blumenthal & Co. Inc. In Very Good+ condition, with minor wear to the gilding in back. $95

A fantastic profusion of violets against green foliage with subtle colors and glazes in the background is just the thing for a piece of the sweet nostalgia of yesteryear! The porcelain itself is flawless, the painting is also bright and without chipping. Dimensions are a generous 2 3/4" x 2", prong set in its original brass 6 pronged setting, with an open C-clasp. Very Good condition. Enjoy for $58

Fabulous Large Plump 1930's Sapphire Blue Rhinestone Floral Brooch

This exceptional floral brooch has the quality you can expect from a top jewelry house of the 1930s, yet is unsigned. The brooch is beautifully designed and constructed, with a riveted, layered silvery pot meal setting featuring six large (7/8") faceted unfoiled blue glass ovals prong-set openback, centered with a floret of pave crystal rhinestones. The beauty of these stones is overwhelming--the color of the oval stones are a true sapphire blue. The leaves are textured and enameled green. At 4 1/4"tall and 2 3/4" wide, this is a big heavy brooch. It will definitely weigh down a light fabric, so pin it into a bra strap or slip if you wear it with a light blouse or dress. Otherwise, this is what they used to call a "coat brooch," because women wore them on their coats or jackets. But you could use it to pin together that stylish sash, or to decorate your bag. With this brooch and your smile, you'll feel like a million dollars. Very Good condition, with wear to high points on the enamel. $72

1930s Big Pot Metal Rhinestone Brooch

Reverse

Large 1930s Pave Crystal & Red Rhinestone Flower Brooch

Here's another lost beauty from the 1930s, a chromium plated pot metal brooch design that you can sometimes find with different colored navettes for petals. This one has ruby red navettes, along with the pave crystals. The flower head petals are concave to the domed pave center, allowing stones to spark off one another. This graceful jewel is 3 1/2" tall and in Very Good condition, with all rhinestones present and sparkling. $78

Large Pave Iris Orchid Brooch

Reverse

Large 1930s Pave Rhinestone Iris Pot Metal Brooch

Made in the art deco era, this circa 1930 pot metal iris offers a tropical deco design--the wild undulations, while curvy, still have a linear Art Deco deco arrangement. My heart beats fast every time I see this Book Piece beauty. Featured on page 74 of the 2008 Edition of Warman's Vintage Jewelry, by Leigh Leshner, this incredible design features pave clear crystals set in textured and beaded metal. This one's a little different than the same style of brooches shown in the same book on page 122. For one thing, some of the rhinestones are prong set--on a row icing the top of the brooch and on the florets at 5 O'clock and 7 o'clock. Also, this brooch is taller at 3 3/4", and willowy at 2 1/8" at the widest point. This example is in especially nice Very Good+ condition, with rhinestones still sparkling and pot metal smooth, still shining and without corrosion. Only the prong-set stones are slightly dark around the edges, but still strike sparks in the centers. Enjoy this desirable, hard- to find, dazzling showgirl beauty! $85
