Costume Jewelry

On this page we will try to gather our biggest rhinestone brooches, those beauties from
the 1930s and '1940s. I like to call them my "big girls." These large brooches are almost always
unsigned, but are beloved by collectors because they call to mind in the golden age of glamour

HUGE Red & Clear Rhinestone Book Piece Bouquet Coat Brooch!

This wonderful bouquet of grape hyacinths has been immortalized on page 61 of Leigh Leshner's VINTAGE JEWELRY 1920-1940s. An enormous beauty from the 1930s, this wavy bouquet and other big brooches like it were called "coat brooches." Wear to add vintage glamour to that new coat, or add splendor to an old one. Beautify any jacket or sweater by adding this big girl. It's 4 1/2" tall by 2 3/4" wide made of heavy, chromium plated pot metal. The the beaded stems and tendrils set with clear stones are so representative of the age--notice how all the navette mounts are set with 2 chatons each--I've seen many such brooches from this era-- It was a style then, but often new collectors don't realize that and think the wrong shaped stones have been replaced in these settings. Minor wear is uniform, and the stones still strike sparks. Very Good condition. $95

Rising from the center are three red baguette stamens, perched on wire so that as you move they shimmy and shake! He'll love this old fashioned look! The stem is enameled brown, the lowest part sparkling with more diamante. The leaves are deep green, each outlined in rhodium plating. and the leaves. Measures 3 1/4" tall. Very Good condition with minor age-related yellowing.  $90

Large 1930s Pave Crystal & Red Rhinestone Flower Brooch

Here's another lost beauty from the 1930s, a chromium plated pot metal brooch design that you can sometimes find with different colored navettes for petals. This one has ruby red navettes, along with the pave crystals. The flower head petals are concave to the domed pave center, allowing stones to spark off one another. This graceful jewel is 3 1/2" tall and in Very Good condition, with all rhinestones present and sparkling. $78

L.S. co Sterling Silver Brooch

Reverse

Fabulous Large Sterling Silver L.S. Co. Art Deco Brooch

Not a good picture (there is no green on any of the metal), but still, this brooch is a scarce and wondrous design set with peridot green stones, back from the times when the art deco linear design lines were evolving into the spare nosegays of retro modern. In most of these old pins, like this one, the prong set stones are unfoiled and absolutely brilliant.. Only the open buds and their stems have vermeil coating; this is deliberate to the design, since gold and silver together in one jewel was stylish during the 1940s.. The brooch is a big one at 3" x 2 7/8". Very Good condition, with bits of tarnish here and there. $68

Vintage Sterling Silver Lambs Brooch

Sterling Silver Mother Sheep and Baby Lamb Brooch

The lush 3-D design is what makes this piece extra special, connoting plump fluffiness in the mama and the little baby lamb, both with bells around their necks. This great jewel is 2 1/2" tall and 2 3/4" wide; it is also thick and heavy. It has been well cared for and is in Excellent condition. This brooch weighs one ounce! Marked in back, partially rubbed away, "STERLING." $78

Rare 1930s Era Pot Metal Turtle Brooch with Huge Stone

Who won't love this dear old cast pot metal turtle? His shell is a giant unfoiled faceted sapphire glass navette jewel set with wide prongs. His hands and feet all have individual fingers and toes. He has a cute little tail and red rhinestone eyes. Measurements are 2 3/4" tall from tail to nose and 1 3/4" wide, a decent size compared to the tiny turtles from mid century design houses, but that was the old way in 1930s and '40s fashion jewels. Equipped with an early safety clasp, this one of a kind turtle jewel is in Excellent condition. $58

Art Deco Bird Brooch

Reverse

Art Deco Pave Rhinestone Soaring Bird Brooch

This is a dramatic find from the late 1930s or early 1940s, a glorious soaring bird! This sweetheart is somewhat 3-D with slightly tiered wigs and tail feathers. She is covered in crystal rhinestone in beaded settings. The finish is either very shiny chrome or rhodium, and she has a single black rhinestone eye. On her back is a design number, 20616. The brooch measures 2 7/8" from lower tail feather to tip of beak, and a 2 3/4" wingspan, which covers a lot of area. Vintage Pink Rhinestone Big Bouquet Brooch

We have for you a beautiful example of pre WWIII jewelry of the late 1930s and early 1940s in a style transitioning between Art Deco and Retro. This delicate looking spray has been strong enough to last for more than 60 years, and there's no reason it can't go another hundred. The spray is made of stiff wires hold prong set openback unfoiled pink oblong rhinestones to represent the flower heads; others end in beaded metal buds. The spray rises from an undulating ribbon and foliage. design of smooth goldtone. Notice the piercing work in the leaves. Fabulous Large Plump 1930's Sapphire Blue Rhinestone Floral Brooch

This exceptional floral brooch has the quality you can expect from a top jewelry house of the 1930s, yet is unsigned. The brooch is beautifully designed and constructed, with a riveted, layered silvery pot meal setting featuring six large (7/8") faceted unfoiled blue glass ovals prong-set openback, centered with a floret of pave crystal rhinestones. The beauty of these stones is overwhelming--the color of the oval stones are a true sapphire blue. The leaves are textured and enameled green. At 4 1/4"tall and 2 3/4" wide, this is a big heavy brooch. It will definitely weigh down a light fabric, so pin it into a bra strap or slip if you wear it with a light blouse or dress. Otherwise, this is what they used to call a "coat brooch," because women wore them on their coats or jackets. But you could use it to pin together that stylish sash, or to decorate your bag. With this brooch and your smile, you'll feel like a million dollars. Very Good condition, with wear to high points on the enamel. $68

Large Pave Iris Orchid Brooch

Reverse

Large 1930s Pave Rhinestone Iris Pot Metal Brooch

Made in the art deco era, this circa 1930 pot metal iris offers a tropical deco design--the wild undulations, while curvy, still have a linear Art Deco deco arrangement. My heart beats fast every time I see this Book Piece beauty. Featured on page 74 of the 2008 Edition of Warman's Vintage Jewelry, by Leigh Leshner, this incredible design features pave clear crystals set in textured and beaded metal. This one's a little different than the same style of brooches shown in the same book on page 122. For one thing, some of the rhinestones are prong set--on a row icing the top of the brooch and on the florets at 5 O'clock and 7 o'clock. Also, this brooch is taller at 3 3/4", and willowy at 2 1/8" at the widest point. This example is in especially nice Very Good+ condition, with rhinestones still sparkling and pot metal smooth, still shining and without corrosion. Only the prong-set stones are slightly dark around the edges, but still strike sparks in the centers. Enjoy this desirable, hard- to find, dazzling showgirl beauty! $85

Antique Pot Metal Cockateil Brooch or Bird of Paradise Pave Rhinestone Brooch

Reverse

Antique Pot Metal Cockatiel or Bird of Paradise Rhinestone Brooch

This beautiful peacock, cockatiel, or bird of paradise was created and copied by several designers or manufactures during circa 1930s to mid-1940s. I've never seen one signed. This is the shorter version at only 3" tall. In Warman's Vintage Jewelry, 2008 edition, page 10, author Leigh Leshner shows this bird in several sizes and explains that differences in design sizes were common. Crystal rhinestones are pave along the body and tail feathers of bird, who also sports a twinkling blue rhinestone eye. The bright silvery finish does not show much wear, and the rhinestones flash like crazy. Very Good+ for this beloved antique. Fastens with early safety catch. $58
